Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival via Denver International Airport and welcome dinner

Arrival day into Denver International Airport (DEN) and take a free shuttle to the hotel. Enjoy a welcome meeting and dinner at 6:00PM where we get to know everyone and talk about the tour. Our hotel is Quality Inn & Suites Denver International Airport at 6890 Tower Rd. Your evening is free to enjoy the indoor heated pool or walk around and get a few city birds. [Overnight in Denver] (D)

Day 2: Short grass prairie, dry scrub, and over Monarch Pass into Gunnison

As we start our birding adventure, we head south down into the short grass prairie of central Colorado. Here we will look for Mountain Plover and Burrowing Owls along a quiet dirt road. The town of Cañon City has some Choya cactus which are good for finding Curve-billed Thrasher, Canyon Towhee and Scaled Quail in an unlikely place. Stopping at a few hotspots, the tour takes us west into the Gunnison Basin including spots like Poncha Springs, Cotopaxi, and Monarch Pass. The habitats include short grass prairie, Pinyon-Juniper, high desert cholla, and mixed conifer. Target species include Juniper Titmouse, Mountain Bluebird and Bushtit in the Pinyon-Juniper, Canyon Towhee, Scaled Quail, Curve-billed Thrasher in the cholla, American Dipper, Red-naped Sapsucker, and American Three-toed Woodpecker in the mixed conifer and mountain streams. Traversing over Monarch Pass will be our first time over the Continental Divide of the trip. [Overnight in Gunnison] (B, L, D)

Day 3: Gunnison Sage Grouse lek and Black Canyon NP to Grand Junction

Our earliest morning of the tour starts viewing the rare and endangered Gunnison Sage-Grouse from a lek box. After a warm breakfast and late checkout from the hotel, it is time to look for more targets as we continue our trip west to Grand Mesa. We could visit Crested Butte, Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, Sweitzer Lake SP, Fruitgrowers Reservoir, and a few other spots along the way. Target today include Gunnison Sage-Grouse, Rosy-Finches that are still around this time of year, Green-tailed and Spotted Towhees, White-throated Swift, Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay, Orange-crowned Warbler, Fox Sparrow, and maybe even a Dusky Grouse.  Other target species include waterfowl, Marsh Wren, 5 species of Grebes, Yellow-headed Blackbird and a variety of shorebirds. Bird species will depend on snowpack in the high country and water levels as we drop down into Grand Mesa. The scenery just keeps getting better and better so bring your camera. [Overnight in Grand Junction] (B, L, D)

Day 4: Pinyon Juniper habitat, sparrows, and Cameo Canyon to Craig

After yesterday’s early morning, today we get to sleep for an additional two hours.  Pinyon Juniper habitat is the target for the morning where we hope to see Pinyon Jay, Juniper Titmouse, Gray Vireo, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Gray and Ash-throated Flycatcher. Some Gambel’s Quail and Black-chinned Hummingbirds could also be around. A field lunch is needed as the Sagebrush Sparrows like to be far away from everything near the Utah border. Heading towards Craig takes us by Coal Canyon where Chukars are possible. Extra stops along the Yampa River will fill up the drive to Craig. [Overnight in Craig] (B, L, D)

Day 5: Sharp-tailed Grouse lek and Steamboat Springs to Walden.

Dusky Grouse males find a quiet ridge line with Gambel’s Oak to boom for females’ attention. These spots are difficult to get to, but we will try first thing this morning. Then we head to the appropriately named Sharp-tailed Grouse lek. They hold their tails in a point while they have a foot stomping time. A warm breakfast awaits in Steamboat Springs where we spend several hours tracking down any remaining mountain species before the trek to Walden and North Park. Targets are Dusky and Sharp-tailed Grouse, Sandhill Crane, Evening Grosbeak, Cassin’s Finch, California Gull, American White Pelican, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Golden Eagle, shorebirds and waterfowl. Along with birds, we could see Snowshoe Hares, Wyoming Ground-Squirrels, White-tailed Prairie Dogs, Moose, American Badgers and Pronghorns. [Overnight in Walden] (B, L, D)

Day 6: Greater Sage-Grouse, White-tailed Ptarmigan chase, and the trek out across the prairie to Wray

Day 7: Greater Prairie-Chicken and the Pawnee National Grasslands

Flashing their yellow orange air sacks and eyebrows will be on display for our last lek morning. We might also be able to check off Burrowing Owl, Northern Bobwhite, and Ring-necked Pheasant as well as a few sparrow species. The fresh air and mile upon mile of short-grass prairie awaits us for the rest of the day. Mountain Plovers, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspurs will be the jewels on our list. A few hotspots are also on the agenda. The brightly colored Cinnamon Teal and American Avocets, a few of my favorites, should be seen this day. After a full day in the field, our trek takes us to our final meal near Denver airport. [Overnight in Denver] (B, L, D)

Day 8: Departure from Denver

Enjoy a continental breakfast and departure via free shuttle to the Denver International Airport (DEN).

In addition, alcoholic beverages, travel insurance, excursions not included in the tour itinerary, extras in hotels such as laundry service, minibar, room service, telephone calls, and personal items, medical fees, other items or services not specifically mentioned as being included are not included.

When to Go

This tour is timed for the height of grouse lek dancing. The males are displaying every morning for any female that shows up on their historic lek sites. Most of the wintering birds are still around and early spring migration has begun.

Health & Safety

High altitude can pose several problems from altitude sickness to sunburn. Even in winter, sunburn is frequent at high elevations; we recommend using strong sunscreen. Drinking plenty of water will help with elevation issues. Please consult your doctor prior to departure for updated recommendations and cautions for high elevation travel. Additional altitude information can be accessed here  as the tour elevation range is from 3,500 to 12,000 feet above sea level. Masks are not required after Covid 19. However, your guide might request that you wear a mask if unwell for the safely and health of others. If directed by the guide, this requirement is mandatory. Participants should bring an adequate supply of any personal medications as they may be difficult to obtain during the tour. Finally, Colorado weather changes constantly, so layers are the key to success. A small day bag in the van/car is the best way to access your layers throughout the day.

Tour Pace

This is a moderatly paced tour. Expect early mornings for lek viewing with arrival before the sun comes up. Because these grouse and prairie chickens are located all over the state, expect longer drives each day with birding stops and bathroom breaks along the way. Walking will usually be on well-maintained trails or along roads. You will have some time for bird photography while birding.

Climate

Colorado weather in April is unpredictable and changes all the time. It can snow in the mountains any day of the year while the plains could reach highs in the 70’s. Plan on average low in the 30s with some wind and a high in the mid-70s. Best to dress in layers. Lek viewing in the morning means several hours of very little movement during the coolest time of the day. Hand/toe warmers are helpful if you find most mornings a little cold.

Accommodations

We will have comfortable standard hotels throughout the tour. Some of our remote locations mean that accommodations are limited. In larger towns the hotels will be comfortable often using the Choice Hotel company. Wi-Fi is available in all locations.

Transportation

You’ll be traveling in a 12-passenger window van or minivan, or large SUV depending on the group size. When using 12-passenger window vans, we’ll take a maximum of eight passengers per vehicle plus the leader/driver. Participants should be able to ride in any seat in tour vehicles as we will switch every day. Smoking is prohibited in the vehicles, hotel rooms or when the group is gathered for meals, checklists, etc. Most of the U.S.A. has non-smoking guidelines in public. If you smoke in the field, we ask that you do so well away and downwind from the group. If any location where the group is gathered has a stricter policy than the She Flew Birding Tour policy, that stricter policy will prevail.

Entering the United States

Non-US citizens need a valid passport and may need a tourist visa. Consult your embassy or consulate for details.

Additional Information

More complete general information will be sent to each registrant on receipt of deposit. A tour packet with instructions for meeting the group, hotel addresses and a detailed itinerary will be sent upon receiving your final payment 90 days prior to departure. Other news will be communicated as necessary.
